Directory of Design: Woodworking in America

Woodworking has long shaped the story of American design, from Shaker chairs to mid-century classics. To honor that history, we partnered with Pennsylvania Woodworks to reimagine the tradition for today’s homes by creating furniture and accessories that are as thoughtful as they are functional. Each design is a celebration of craftsmanship, material integrity, and the joy of living with objects built to last.
This shared appreciation for craft is what drives our ongoing collaboration with Pennsylvania Woodworks. Together, we’ve developed everything from tables and lamps to drying racks and accent pieces, each infused with a distinctly American sensibility. What began as admiration for their beautifully made utilitarian objects soon grew into a partnership that explores new forms, finishes, and colorways—all crafted right here in the United States.

Katie Elliott, our Vice President of Design, remembers the moment the partnership clicked: “We were searching for simple, functional pieces that could also feel like furniture, and Pennsylvania Woodworks’ folding wooden drying racks immediately stood out. They’re practical, yes, but also elegant enough to leave out in your living space. That marriage of utility and beauty is exactly what we look for.”

For us, wood has never been just another material—it’s alive, evolving alongside your home. “Wood brings a sense of warmth and grounding that nothing else can,” Katie explains. “It carries the human touch in every curve, every turned leg, every joint. That’s what makes it heirloom-worthy.”
Assistant Product Designer Ian McMurray adds: “Working with wood is a chance to celebrate the natural character of the material while shaping it into something functional and beautiful. The collaboration with Pennsylvania Woodworks allows us to experiment—whether that’s classic silhouettes, new proportions, or a signature splash of our iconic Persimmon color.”

"Wood carries the human touch in every curve, every turned leg, every joint. That’s what makes it heirloom-worthy.”
Designing a piece with Pennsylvania Woodworks is a careful, hands-on process. From early sketches to the final product, every proportion, joint, and finish is considered. The PW team’s deep expertise in wood manufacturing ensures each piece meets the heirloom quality we strive for. Even the simplest details—like the curve of a leg or the angle of a joint—require precise skill, transforming functional objects into something artful.
One standout from the collection is the Arbor Floor Lamp. Its straightforward silhouette rests on a turned wood base (now available in our Persimmon stain), offering a playful yet timeless way to bring color into a space. But it’s just one highlight among many. The Hodges Side Table celebrates joinery with contrasting wood accents and softened bullnosed edges, while the Rowan Occasional Table showcases the natural beauty of pieced white oak in a versatile, minimalist form. For wall storage, the Enfield Shelf combines precise lap joints with a thoughtful dowel detail—perfect for displaying or hanging everyday essentials. Together, these designs reflect the depth of the collaboration, blending utility with heirloom-worthy character.

Styling Tip: Let the wood take center stage. Pair these pieces with natural fibers, warm metals, and neutral or jewel-toned textiles. Over time, embrace the evolving patina—every small mark and shift in tone tells a story that grows with your home.

Our collaboration with Pennsylvania Woodworks is more than a collection. It’s a celebration of American design, a commitment to quality and sustainability, and a reminder that the best pieces are the ones built to last, both in style and in story. By welcoming these handcrafted objects into our collection, we’re not just offering furniture and lighting—we’re sharing heirlooms, thoughtfully designed and proudly made in America.
