Utilitarian in purpose but wildly expressive in execution, these vintage hand-knotted Berber rugs weave a story of their own. Authentic, unique and responsibly-sourced from the mountains and souks of Morocco. Katen Bush of Kat + Maouche describes this unique piece:

“Organic geometry and natural tones in a beautiful example of an old style modernist Azilal. It is proof that the oldest pieces often read the most modern. Stunning skill starts with the materials, showing off the exceptional High Atlas wool, finely spun, undyed and silky. Its rough grid of chestnut brown on worn, variegated cream, stands out and provides light contrast for the soft peach strokes that cover half the piece. A ground of irregular stripes echoes the pile palette and, with age, comes through as deep shadowing. The uneven wear leaves the brown pile long and much ground showing, a complex interplay between horizontal and vertical. Traditional loose weave lets the pile lay flat, highlighting the effect. The substantial wear is typical for a rug of this age and adds immeasurably to the piece.

There is little good research on Moroccan rugs and no systematic way of dating them. We refrain from dating the rugs unless we can do so with certainty, which is to say very rarely. In general, most pieces in this collection were woven between 1950 and 2000. The critical distinction between vintage and new rugs is that the vintage pieces were woven for personal use rather than for market and show all the artistry, personality, whimsy, and warmth of folk art. They are utilitarian objects and have been used. Every rug is washed and repaired before it ships to us from Morocco. However, you should be aware that you are purchasing a vintage item. We will provide all the information we can about condition so you know exactly what you are getting.”

Artist Statement

Husband and wife team Katen Bush and Latif Bezzir source authentic and unique vintage Berber rugs directly from the mountains and souks of Morocco. They source responsibly — in-person — working with locals to find outstanding pieces. A Berber-American family and company, they have spent years living in North Africa and are committed to the communities and cultures they work with. They are equally committed to furthering the understanding and appreciation of this particularly female, rural art. And modern art it is — utilitarian in purpose but wildly expressive in execution. Abstract. Vivid. Organic. Honest. Personal. Sophisticated. Whimsical. Slow art knotted by hand. These rugs are specific. They tell something of a weaver, a place, and collectively, of a people’s unique experience. But, as much as these rugs carry the symbols and lush language of a culture, they also resonate far beyond it. Kat+Maouche collect and share these rugs because they love them and use them.
