Embodying the raw beauty of early 19th century industrial lighting, the Schoolhouse Ion is a timeless nod to Thomas Edison’s greatest invention. Inspired by the original design Edison used to test the first light bulb, our Ion collection personifies signature Schoolhouse style, long reigning as our most classic and versatile tabletop lamp. Carefully constructed with mix of materials, each one is finished by hand inside our Portland factory.
Sarah Kirk, Director of Product Development + Management at Schoolhouse attributes the petite lamp's big success and status to a winning combination of factors: "The Ion’s small scale, thoughtful detailing, and play of materials make it such a versatile piece. The utilitarian design keeps the focus on the bulb so it’s all about the glow. It sits happily in nearly any space while providing a handcrafted, heirloom element.” Each Ion comes with a unique, filament style bulb for a candle-like, diffused light perfect for bringing warmth to intimate spaces.
There are three different types of Ions to choose from, each with their own specialized material base. The original Ion Lamp set features a glazed ceramic exterior and cast iron base for a polished look and feel. For our limited-edition Brass Ion, we paired a solid brass body with layered plies of a wood base to create a striking mix of vintage and modern details. Finally, as a special update to the collection, we launched the Ion C-Series. Here we carefully apply colorful matte paint to each handspun steel fixture for a playful spin on the Schoolhouse classic.
Each Ion Lamp comes with 6 feet of twisted black cloth cord and Bakelite cord. A sturdy on/off toggle switch and a signature Schoolhouse Electric nameplate adds the finishing touches to this iconic design. You can see a video of how we make our Ion C-Series here.
