5 Tips for Setting the Perfect Spring Table

5 Tips for Setting the Perfect Spring Table

There’s something inherently exciting about hosting friends. And now that spring has officially sprung, we’re celebrating by sharing our tried-and-true tips for the season of entertaining ahead. From decorating with foraged flowers to using freshly picked fruit as a centerpiece, we're taking every opportunity to bring the outdoors in and embracing all the happy activities warmer weather has to offer. Whether you’re hosting a backyard brunch or an at-home happy hour, we’re here to help. Below, we’ve rounded up some of our best ideas for setting the perfect spring table.

1. Play up the Pattern

When it comes to the table, we like to start with textiles. We've found that layering vintage pieces with new finds is an effortless way to create a cool, casual mood. Begin by selecting a table cloth. If you don’t have one and want to stick to a budget, try sourcing a vintage fabric from your local thrift shop (you can also use a table runner or skip the base layer altogether).

From there, pick a few napkin options. There are many reasons why we feel passionate that everyone should own a set of well-made cloth napkins. Although a seemingly simple piece of fabric, in reality these tiny textiles have the power to make or break a table — elevating them in a way that's fresh and fun or subtly sophisticated. They are also sustainable (since you can wash and reuse them) and incredibly versatile (perfect for parties, everyday dinners, or as a tea towel).

2. Let Guests Pick Their Personality

One of the best ways to keep a casual atmosphere, is to let guests serve themselves. We like to take it one step further and let our friends pick their plates as well. The best part? This means you don't have to fully set the table. Lay out a few options of different napkins and other tablewares and see who's drawn to what.

3. Mix & Match Your Tableware

It's no secret that we've long admired a mix beats match mentality. That said, mixing and matching doesn't necessarily mean you have to maximize on pattern every time. You can still add variety to your table with neutral linens while still making it feel interesting. Here are a few of our favorite go-to pairings in order of formality.

Casual & Colorful: Scallop Trim Napkin Set + Bistro Flatware Set + Enamelware Plate

Neutral & Modern: Blue Daisy Tenugui ClothEveryday FlatwareHasami Plate

Polished & Picturesque: Five Two Cloth Napkin Set + Elevated Flatware + Vandvid Plate

4. Use a Freshly Picked Centerpiece

Springtime is synonymous with new beginnings, so it feels natural to look outdoors for inspiration. One of our favorite ways to decorate a spring table is with fresh flowers (read our tips for arranging here). Think seasonally with any blooms in your backyard, foraged branches, or greenery from the neighborhood.

Another lesser known styling tip is to use fresh fruit to decorate. Not only is it an inexpensive option, but it also makes a great gift that guests can also take home with them.

5. Finesse with Thoughtful Details

Have you even been to a gathering and been blown away by the details?Thoughtful finishing touches can help set the tone for an easy, effortless time together. Run through the party in your mind from the eyes of the guest and get creative with your resources. Is someone bringing their child? Print out some coloring pages. Not sure about dietary restrictions? Account for allergies by including a small labeled list of ingredients next to each dish.

Just remember you can still be an excellent host and skip all the stress! The secret? be easy on yourself. At the end of the day, if you're having a good time, your guests will too! So try to relax, soak up some sunshine, and enjoy this special time with friends.
