Schoolhouse Art Studio was conceived from a desire to celebrate creative expression and the important role that art plays in the making of the home. In this new series, we handpicked five independent artists to create one-of-a-kind works of art that will be enjoyed for generations to come. Below, Emily shares with us her process, inspiration and the role art plays in her own home.
How would you describe your work and yourself as an artist?
"My work is energetic & colorful! As somewhat of a shy person, art is my way of communicating joy and optimism to the world in a visually bold way. I studied fine art & art history in college so much of my work references some of my favorite artists like Robert Rauschenberg and Joan Mitchell. Hopefully my paintings bring happiness to others... that’s my goal!"
What does your creative process look like from start to finish?
"I'll start a new piece with a color palette in mind. Sometimes I'll create small color studies to get an idea down quickly, then scale it up and make any necessary changes in the larger final piece. The painting dictates the composition as I go. My favorite pieces tend to develop easily while others I have to paint over several times before they feel just right."
What do you hope to communicate, or have people experience, with your art and this series in particular?
"It’s such an honor to have someone choose to live with my artwork and bring it into their home to share with their friends and family. I feel so grateful every time I get to share my love of color through painting and It’s the highest compliment when those colors & brushstrokes make other people as happy as they make me! This series was inspired by warmth & memory, nature & history. I love when someone looks at an abstract composition and says, “You know what this reminds me of...? I hope these paintings ignite delight and discussion."
Are they any rituals or routines you follow while creating?
"I always listen to music to stay inspired while I work and, because I have a small studio, I like to keep my workspace tidy as I go."
What role does art and design play in your own home? Tell us about your decor style:
"Art and design play such a big role in our lives and in our home. My husband and I are both artists (he's an animator) so our house is full of books about our favorite artists, photography, artwork made by our friends and special pieces we've collected from our travels together. I have a home studio so it's a bit like living in a rotating gallery. It’s a fun, playful mix of things and there's color everywhere! I'm always hanging up paintings to dry and stacking up new work to be photographed so there's art in various stages of completion everywhere you look. To decide if a piece is finished or not I'll ask, 'Would I definitely hang this in my living room?' If it's a yes, then it's done.
